ALMOND, Wis. — Firefighters risk their lives to save lives, but in order to do so, they need the proper gear. It’s what the Almond Volunteer Fire Department is trying to do.

Assistant Fire Chief Dennis Schultz has been working with the Almond Volunteer Fire Department for around 27 years, but for as long as he’s been with them, he said they’ve never gotten new helmets.

“We got a grant for new gear quite a few years ago and we had enough money to get new gear and a breathing compressed air trailer ... And then we ran out of money for the grant so we couldn’t redo the helmets at that time,” Schultz said.
