Firefighters mopping up Honolulu brush fire

HONOLULU- Honolulu Fire Chief Attilio Leonardi said this evening that the Nanakuli brush fire was "just about under control.''

The blaze that broke out Sunday blackened some 28-hundred acres.

Nanakuli High and Intermediate School, Nanakuli Elementary and Nanaikapono Elementary were closed today because of the fire. The state Department of Education will decide tomorrow when they will reopen.

The state Department of Transportation reports thick smoke once again forced the temporary closure of Farrington Highway -- the only public roadway into and out of the area.

The Army opened the four-mile Kolekole Pass as a detour route until 6 p-m. It runs through the U-S Naval Magazine at Lualualei and the Waianae Mountains to connect with Schofield Barracks in Wahiawa.
