LAS VEGAS — Federal and state firefighters reported near-containment Monday of two wildfires burning separately near Las Vegas.
The so-called First Creek fire was expected to be contained by nightfall after charring about 50 acres of desert scrub vegetation off State Route 159 near the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, said Karla Norris, a federal Bureau of Land Management fire spokeswoman.
The fire started Sunday and prompted the closure of the highway overnight near Bonnie Springs, about 20 miles west of Las Vegas. The road reopened Monday.
