A wildfire burning within sight of El Capitan in Yosemite National Park has been 19 percent contained, state firefighting officials said Wednesday.
The Boundary fire, named because it is burning near Boundary Hill, started Monday afternoon above the north rim of the Yosemite Valley, half a mile northwest of the summit of El Capitan. It had burned 441 acres by Wednesday.
The fire was started accidentally by park visitors, but exactly how is under investigation, park spokeswoman Adrienne Freeman said.
The fire has forced the closure of all trail access to the top of El Capitan. Firefighters could not say when they might have the blaze surrounded. The area, at an elevation of 7,000 feet, has not burned in many years and is thick with underbrush.
