NORMAN, Okla. — A firefighter was taken to Norman Regional Hospital on Thursday morning after suffering from heat exhaustion while helping battle a house fire in the 2800 block of 96th Avenue NE.
Firefighters were called about 11 a.m. to the home at 2829 96th NE, Assistant Fire Chief Jim Bailey said.
The fire was under control within about an hour and a half, but firefighters remained on the scene throughout the afternoon.
Firefighter Cody Goodnight was released from the hospital about 3 p.m. and is expected to return to work today, Bailey said.
The house is owned by Norman police officer Curtis Garrett, who was home when the fire started, Bailey said. Garrett and his two dogs were able to get out of the house unharmed.
“I believe the house will probably be declared a total loss,” Bailey said. He did not have an estimated amount for the damage.
Several firefighters and one police officer were stung by hornets while battling the blaze, the assistant chief said, “but none of them required medical treatment.”
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
