GHEENS, La. — To teach youths valuable life skills and help build its membership, the Vacherie-Gheens Volunteer Fire Company has reintroduced its junior firefighter program.

Company President Katie Crochet said she and Fire Chief Spence Cressionie brought back the program, which had fizzled for lack of interest, to give the couple's four boys something positive to do. Now, the department has about 30 junior firefighters.

"It's getting more organized, so they'll actually have officers and hold their own meetings," Crochet said. In addition to volunteering for events such as the bayou cleanup, junior firefighters get certified in automated external defibrillators and CPR, Crochet said. This month, they'll attend a training where they'll learn about equipment and compete to see who can retrieve tools or put on gear the quickest.
