CLINTON, Iowa — A firefighter who was badly injured in an explosion is now able to breathe on his own, according to officials.

City officials said Clinton Fire Department firefighter Adam Cain “continues to slowly improve,” but is still in critical condition after a Jan. 5 grain-silo explosion that killed his colleague, Lt. Eric Hosette, Quad-City Times reported.

“He (Cain) is scheduled for surgery on one of his broken arms this morning,” City Administrator Matt Brooke said. “The family asks for continued prayers and thanks everyone for all the support. It truly has been incredible!”

Cain has been undergoing treatment at the University of Iowa Hospital since the explosion.

Brooke said OSHA, the Iowa Occupational Safety and Health Administration and NIOSH are investigating the incident.
