RANCHO PALOS VERDES, Calif. — A Los Angeles County firefighter, critically injured while battling a residential fire in Rancho Palos Verdes, died at a hospital Thursday, officials said.

Firefighters were called to the 30700 block of Tarapaca Road for a fire just past 2 a.m., spokesman Franklin Lopez said. As of 8:45 a.m., firefighters were still on the scene.

The firefighter leaves behind his wife and two young sons, Supervisor Janice Hahn said in a tweet.

“They were able to save the family inside, but tragically, one of our own Los Angeles County firefighters lost his life in the effort,” Hahn said. “His bravery and sacrifice will not be forgotten. …

“This is devastating and my prayers are with his wife and two young sons as well as his friends and colleagues in the Fire Department and everyone that knew and loved him,” she said.

The street where the fire broke out has single-story houses and ends in a cul-de-sac that overlooks the ocean.
