WASHINGTON — A firefighter died Sunday days after suffering a medical emergency at the D.C. Fire and EMS training facility.

NBC Washington reported that firefighter Alex Graham, 48, suffered a “critical medical emergency” on Thursday. He was rushed to the hospital for treatment, but died several days later.

“It is with great sadness and sorrow that I am informing you of the passing of Technician Alex Graham from Engine Company 21,” D.C. Fire Chief Gregory Dean said in a statement.

Graham, who joined D.C. Fire and EMS in 2002, was awarded D.C. Fire’s 2018 “Firefighter of the Year” award for “displaying the highest degree of skill, zeal, judgment and ingenuity,” WJLA.com reported.

“I, along with the department’s command staff, the leadership from IAFF Local 36 and members of the DC Firefighter Burn Foundation are now with Technician Graham’s loved ones and relatives, and we will all share funeral arrangements as soon as we know more,” Chief Dean said.
