PECULIAR, Mo. — A Missouri firefighter died Sunday after falling through the floor while battling a house fire.
West Peculiar Firefighter Charles “Chuck” McCormick fell near the front door after entering the home and landed in the basement, according to The Kansas City Star.
He was transported to the hospital where he later died from his injuries, according to Grandview Fire Chief Ron Graham.
“(McCormick’s) death is a reminder of the brave and selfless work of Missouri’s fire service,” said Missouri Governor Mike Parson in a statement.
The fire reportedly started in the laundry room of the house Sunday morning, and residents, including a grandmother and her grandchildren, managed to escape the home before fire crews arrived. No other injures were reported.
According to a post by the Doolittle Rural Fire Protection District, McCormick was an Army veteran and is survived by his wife and three children.
