PLAINFIELD, N.J. — A Plainfield firefighter died while fighting a house fire in the city on Friday morning, a city councilman said.

Marques Hudson died sometime after firefighters were called to a fire on Emerson Avenue, Councilman Robert J. Graham said.

“This young man sacrificed his life to save the lives of others,” Graham said on Facebook Live. “This is a tragic loss, this is terrible. My condolences are with the whole first responder community. I’m with you, I’m praying for you.”

Video from the scene shows a partially charred multi-story house.

Additional information about the fire, which broke out around 8 a.m., wasn’t immediately available.

Hudson has been a public employee since 2022, according to state pension records.

City officials declined to immediately comment and have called a 3 p.m. press conference.
