QUINCY, Mass. — The National Fire Protection Association is now accepting nominations for the James M. Shannon Advocacy Medal.

According to the NFPA, the medal recognizes an individual’s outstanding efforts in standing up for fire safety issues.

The award was created to honor former NFPA president James Shannon, who helped the organization significantly advance its mission to make key changes to reduce fire loss, such as advocating the requirement for home fire sprinklers.

“This award honors fire and life safety advocacy at its best,” NFPA vice president of Outreach and Advocacy Lorraine Carli said. “We take pride in recognizing these courageous individuals who have been vocal allies in the push for a safer world.”

Anyone in the fire service or general public who advocates for fire and life safety can be nominated for the award. Applications are due Feb. 23, 2018 and can be sent here.

The winner will be sent to Las Vegas for the NFPA’s Conference & Expo in June to be honored.
