Off-duty Md. county firefighter dies in tractor accident
Drue Jones, a 14-year veteran of the fire department, was found by first responders after a welfare check was requested when Jones didn't arrive for work
FREDERICK COUNTY, Md. — A 14-year member of the Frederick County Division of Fire and Rescue Services died Tuesday morning in an accident involving a tractor, according to a press release from the division of fire and rescue services.
Drue Jones, 60, was found by first responders early Tuesday after a welfare check was requested when Jones didn't arrive for work at 6 a.m., the release said.
Montgomery County fire and police as well as Frederick County fire and rescue units arrived at his home in the 23000 block of West Harris Road in Dickerson.
A search team checked the property and within 20 minutes personnel located an overturned tractor, with one victim, down a steep embankment, according to the release.
Due to the complex terrain, the slope of the embankment and the likelihood of traumatic injury, the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Technical Rescue Team, MDSP aviation and the medical “Go Team” was requested. Once crews were able to get to the victim, they determined that Jones had died from his injuries and was pronounced dead at 9:14 a.m., the release said.
Police and fire crews from both jurisdictions remained on the scene as of noon Tuesday, according to the release.
Jones is the father of Stephen Jones, who is also a career firefighter in Frederick County and president of the local firefighters union.
