Off-duty firefighters repair home of disabled resident

Firefighters and other local volunteers worked on replacing the roof of the 34-year-old home

ROWLETT, Texas — Rowlett volunteers were in full force this weekend, trying to beat the cold with repairs to the home of a disabled resident.

Off-duty firefighters and emergency responders took to replacing the roof of the 34-year-old home at the corner of Dalrock and Chiesa roads this weekend.

Other volunteers came from churches, the local Explorer post and the city — including Mayor Todd Gottel. Other residents provided food and water. The Home Depot and other businesses picked up the tab for materials and lunch.

The partnership is a first for Rowlett and is similar to programs several area cities have been developing over the last decade to bring homes into code compliance for homeowners who have the desire, but not the means, to make the fixes.

Next up is to install a heater.
