👨‍🚒 3-step instructions to a DIY firefighter costume

What you’ll need:

  • Black pants (sweatpants or jeans)
  • Black jacket or hoodie
  • Yellow reflective tape or duct tape
  • Red shirt (optional for layering)
  • Firefighter helmet (buy a cheap plastic one or make your own – see below)
  • Rain boots or black shoes
  • Toy axe or walkie-talkie (optional props)

Step 1: Create the firefighter jacket

  • Take a black hoodie or jacket.
  • Cut strips of yellow reflective or duct tape and stick them horizontally across the arms, chest, and back. Real firefighter gear usually has 2-3 bands.
  • For extra flair, add silver duct tape above or below the yellow for a more realistic look.

Step 2: Prep the pants

  • Use the same reflective tape to add horizontal stripes around the ankles of your black pants.

Step 3: Add accessories

  • Firefighter helmet: Grab a plastic firefighter helmet from the dollar store or party supply, or make one from cardboard (just paint red and shape the front brim).
  • Red shirt underneath for layering.
  • Boots: Black rain boots work great!
  • Optional: Attach a small toy axe, flashlight or walkie-talkie for realism.

Step 4: Final touches

  • Add a name tag with “FIRE DEPT” or the name of your local station.
  • Messy hair and a little charcoal makeup on the cheeks can give a “just fought a fire” look!
