WALKER, La. — A Walker, La., volunteer firefighter died Saturday while saving a family of five from a burning trailer.
Scott Osenenko, 45, of Livingston Parish Fire Protection District 4, suffered a cardiac arrest after making several trips back to the burning trailer and making certain everyone was out safely.
“That’s what he was doing that day, was trying to secure human life of those people that were in danger, and so we are very honored to have him as a member of our department,” said District 4 Firefighter Pat Varley. “We’ll always remember him, but we will continue to do what we do.”
Firefighter Osenenko was treated at the scene by fellow responders and transported to the Ochsner Medical Center in Baton Rouge where he passed away from his injuries.
He was the first volunteer firefighter to die in the line of duty since the formation of the Walker department 35 years ago.
