Va. volunteer, 17, killed in crash while responding

McGAHEYSVILLE, Va. — A 17-year old Va. firefighter was killed when he was ejected from his personal vehicle while responding to a call early Friday morning.

McGaheysville, Va., volunteer Roy Smith, III left his home at 1 a.m. to answer an automatic alarm set off by an attic fire, according to a statement from McGaheysville Volunteer Fire Department President Bart Myers. Firefighter Smith was involved in a single-vehicle accident and was pronounced dead at the scene.

A member of the department for more than a year, Firefighter Smith was also a junior at Spotswood High School in Penn Laird, Va.
