LAKE TAHOE, Nev. — Combining fuels reduction with live training, the North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District burned four acres of vacant land in Incline Village Monday morning.
At the burn site - located above Geraldine Drive on land owned by the Incline Village General Improvement District - Division Chief Norb Szczurek was amazed at how dry the pine needles, scrub and trees were for early May.
“These are very dry burning conditions for this time of year,” said Szczurek as he surveyed the quickly burning site. “I mean, there was snow on the ground here just two days ago.”
This winter was the Sierra Nevada’s driest in 19 years; as of last week, the overall Sierra snowpack was 29 percent of normal and levels are even lower in the Northern Sierra.
