Congresswoman, advocates to hold live discussion in honor of NPSTW

Rep. Norma Torres, a former LAPD dispatcher, advocate Sarah Weston and public safety training consultant Kim Turner will discuss issues related to the profession

In honor of National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, three public safety advocates are holding a live discussion to celebrate the work of 911 dispatchers, as well as detail proposed legislation related to the profession.

Rep. Norma J. Torres (D–Calif.), who worked for 18 years as a Los Angeles Police Department dispatcher, will host the live video on Facebook and Twitter on April 15 at 10 a.m., and will be joined by 911 Wonder Woman Founder Sara Weston, and Kim Turner, a former police officer, dispatcher and current public safety training consultant.

Torres is also the co-sponsor of the 911 Saves Act, a piece of legislation with bipartisan support that would reclassify first responders under “protective service occupations” instead of “office and administrative support occupations,” adding them to the same category as firefighters, law enforcement officers, corrections officers and other public safety staff, EMS1 previously reported.
