Lancaster, Pa. — Three people were seriously injured when their buggy and a sport utility vehicle collided Monday.
The 6:50 p.m. crash occurred in front of Conestoga Valley Middle School at Mount Sidney and Stumptown roads in East Lampeter Township.
East Lampeter Township Police said a male and two females were taken to Lancaster General Hospital in critical but stable condition.
Their identities and ages were not released Monday night pending notification of family, but police said they were from Paradise.
Police said the open-top carriage was traveling southbound on Mount Sidney Road when the driver attempted to make a left onto Stumptown Road, turning into the path of a northbound Dodge Durango.
Upon impact, the three occupants of the buggy were ejected onto the lawn of a residence at 501 Mount Sidney Road, police said.
Crews who were first on the scene said one of the victims was conscious while the other two drifted in and out.
The male driver of the Durango was not injured, police said.
Both the buggy and the Durango sustained severe front-end damage.
The horse broke loose from the buggy and was later found about three-quarters of a mile from the crash site. Police said they did not know if the animal was injured.
Witmer fire crews and Lancaster Emergency Medical Services Association responded to the crash, which occurred about half a mile from the Witmer fire station.
Stumptown Road was closed from Horseshoe Road to Sue Ann Drive for about two hours.
