MALDEN, Mass. — Arson is to blame for a two-alarm blaze that ravaged the home of a Malden firefighter early yesterday morning on Gilbert Street in Malden, fire officials said.

“We have determined that the fires were intentionally set,” said Jennifer Meith, State Fire Marshal spokesperson. “In addition to the structure fire, there were also two trash fires around the same time in the neighborhood.”

Seven fire engines responded to the blaze at the home of Malden Fire Lt. Frederick Wilson just after 4 a.m. yesterday, said Deputy Chief William Sullivan.

“I looked out the window and my god, the whole house was aflame,” said neighbor Timothy Hegarty, 78. ‘The whole front of the house was engulfed. . . . It’s a very nice neighborhood, a very quiet street. You never expect it to happen here.”
