The cause of a five-alarm fire at a huge vacant warehouse north of downtown remained undetermined Saturday.

The fire broke out about 10:45 p.m. Friday and destroyed the four-story building in the 1200 block of Cass Avenue.

Investigators sifted through the rubble on Saturday, looking for a cause.

About 100 firefighters fought the fire before bringing it under control about 1 a.m. Saturday. No injuries were reported. Fire officials said they had no reason to believe anyone was inside the building when the fire broke out.

The blaze required a lot of the fire department’s strength. Clayton firefighters also arrived to help, while other area departments helped cover the rest of the city.

Six ladder trucks worked the fire, and helped prevent the blaze from spreading to vacant buildings to the east and west.
