A Chicago Fire Department battalion chief was hospitalized Wednesday after his emergency vehicle was struck by a hit-and-run driver at a West Side intersection.
About 5 p.m., the battalion chief was southbound on Pulaski en route to an apartment fire when he apparently stopped for a red light at Congress, said Chicago fire Lt. Larry Flynn. He then drove the Crown Victoria -- lights and siren on -- through the intersection and was struck by a van, whose driver reportedly ran from the scene.
The battalion chief, who is expected to recover, was talking to paramedics as they took him to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, said Flynn, who works in the same West End Avenue firehouse.
Meantime, fire crews made it to that fire in the 3600 block of West Polk, where they quickly put out a stove fire.
