DOLGEVILLE, N.Y. — Answering the call to fight a fire over the weekend in their central New York village, members of the Dolgeville Volunteer Fire Department ended up at the chief’s house.

Fire Chief Richard Bacher and his wife Sandy were relaxing in the living room when they noticed smoke in their two-story house Saturday, authorities said. He went to his radio and called 911.

According to Assistant Chief Roger Cromer, the fire began in the kitchen area at the back of the home, where it caused extensive damage and got up into the attic. The cause was later determined to be a candle on or near the refrigerator, he said.
