Fire crews tackle Calif. strip mall fire

The Associated Press

ALHAMBRA, Calif. — Several business firms were destroyed today in Alhambra when fire swept through a large warehouse-type building, causing its roof and at least one side to collapse.

Firefighters are still putting out hot spots.

At its worst, a massive column of roiling black smoke towered above the building (about ten miles east of downtown Los Angeles).

Alhambra Fire Department spokeswoman Sherri Miller says the cause is under investigation.

One firefighter was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation, but there are no other injuries.

Miller says the fire apparently started in a bakery and spread to other business firms that are believed to have included a realty office, a travel business and a dating service. As many as nine businesses were damaged.
