CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. — Emergency responders were called out in Chambersburg Monday afternoon after a group of children were found playing with mercury.
Chambersburg Fire Department was dispatched to 1627 Alexander Ave. at 3:45 p.m., according to the Franklin County Department of Emergency Services. The county’s Emergency Management Agency also responded to the incident.
“Some kids had it and they were playing with it,” said Chambersburg Fire Chief William FitzGerald about the toxic liquid metal, of which there was “a minute amount.”
He said he did not know where the children found the mercury, but that there was only “a thermometer’s worth.”
According to a representative of Emergency Services, the scene was cleared within an hour.
