ORLAND PARK, Ill. — An Orland Park firefighter on his way to work was killed in a single-vehicle crash this morning, officials said.

Wes Peak, 36, of Manteno, was killed when his vehicle crashed on I-57 and 190th Street in southwest suburban Matteson, officials said. After losing control he struck a metal pole and was ejected, officials said.

The accident happened at 6:30 a.m. and he was pronounced dead by Olympia Fields St. James Hospital at 6:40 a.m., according to a spokesman for the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Peak had served with the Orland Fire Protection District for seven years, according to a spokesman for the south suburb.

“He touched so many lives in a positive way; it is equally heartbreaking to the organization as it is on his family,” according to a statement from the town.

The accident is under investigation.
