Rift grows between city, department after spring investigation

MASON, Ohio — City leaders are poised to spend tens of thousands of dollars to analyze and improve their embattled fire department.
In the meantime, the fire chief is being criticized for leaving a station understaffed while firefighters attend union meetings on city time.
The first move is an example of the progress the department has made after an eye-opening investigation last spring.
