Most Colo. fire evacuees allowed to return

Fire crews have encircled 40 percent of the fire in southern Colorado that swept across 4,500 acres, claimed five homes, 10 outbuildings and forced the evacuation of about 40 families, officials said today.

Barb Timock of the U.S. Forest Service said most of the evacuees have returned to their homes and the last 25 residents will be able to return home today.

Six four-person crews spent the night watching for and dousing hot spots along the five mile long perimeter of the Mauricio Canyon Fire in Huerfano and Las Animas counties, about 160 miles south of Denver.
