WEST ISLIP, N.Y. — A West Islip man was killed when his car collided with the minivan of a volunteer firefighter on his way to answer an alarm, Suffolk County police said.

Vincent Gallagher, 79, a retired New York City police officer, was driving his 2001 Chevy Cavalier east on Union Boulevard in West Islip around 7:40 p.m. Friday, Third Squad Det. Sgt. Thomas Groneman said. At the same time, Thomas Squicciarini, 50, also of West Islip and a volunteer firefighter, was responding to a fire alarm. Squicciarini was traveling north on Pat Drive, and as he turned his 2004 Nissan Quest left to travel west on Union Boulevard, he collided with Gallagher’s car, Groneman said.

Squicciarini “pulled up, stopped [at a stop sign] and then pulled out,” Groneman said. “He didn’t see any vehicles and then he went.”
