NEW BRUNSWICK — A veteran city firefighter collapsed at his desk at his Burnet Street firehouse this morning and died despite the efforts of the department EMTs at hand.
Acting Lt. Thomas Van Liew, 52, apparently succumbed to heart failure, although the exact cause has not been determined, department officials said.
Van Liew arrived at 8:05 a.m. for his usual shift at the Engine 2 firehouse and was doing paperwork, said Director Robert Rawls.
