GHENT, N.Y. — A New York volunteer firefighter was killed while responding to a motor vehicle accident on Tuesday.
Fire Police Cpt. William Akin Jr., of the Ghent Volunteer Fire Company, had stopped and cleared an intersection when he crossed the road and crashed his privately owned vehicle into a telephone pole.
Investigators are trying to determine the cause of death, which may have involved a medical emergency causing the accident.
Cpt. Akin, 52, was a fire service veteran of more than 25 years.
