Ohio fire wipes out health-food livestock business

The Associated Press

TOLEDO, Ohio — An early morning fire that destroyed a four-barn complex killed hundreds of animals raised for a natural food business.

The fire in Oregon in northwest Ohio early Friday killed 150 goats and more than 300 chickens as well as rabbits, geese and assorted chicks.

Business owner Prakash Thombre also lost a truck, two cars, other equipment and a supply of fresh feed.

Thombre and his family raised the animals without hormones and grew vegetables without using pesticides.

He sold the animals and vegetables to area health-food and grocery stores.

Oregon Fire Chief Bill Wilkins says the cause of the fire is undetermined.
