The Victorian Advocate
WHARTON, Texas — The story continues in the case of what will happen to the assets of a fallen Wharton firefighter and his transsexual wife. At a court hearing Friday, arguments from attorneys representing family members of Thomas Araguz III and his widow, Nikki Araguz, were heard by State District Judge Randy Clapp at the Wharton County Courthouse.
The judge is expected to make a decision next week. The family argued the widow was born a man, and Texas does not recognize same-sex marriages.
The judge’s ruling would determine who would take control of $600,000 in death benefits. Veteran firefighter Thomas Araguz III was killed last year while fighting a fire at an egg farm near Boling.
