Smoke alarm helped occupants escape fire at home in R.I.

PROVIDENCE, R.I.- Fire officials credit a smoke alarm with saving the lives of three people from a home that caught fire in Providence.

The fire on Forest Street started about 7 a-m yesterday. It took about an hour and a half to get under control and was dangerous enough at one point that firefighters were called out of the home.

Battalion Chief Paul Thomas says four firefighters were taken to Miriam Hospital with injuries not considered serious. Three occupants of the home made it out safely, but a Red Cross spokeswoman says they lost everything.

Fire officials believe the fire was sparked by an electrical problem in the basement of the house. They say a smoke alarm woke up the man, who escaped with a woman and a teenage girl.
