NEW ORLEANS — Two firefighters suffered minor injuries Thursday morning while battling a three-alarm fire that heavily damaged a building in the Lower Garden District, according to a New Orleans Fire Department spokesman.

The fire broke out shortly after 3:30 a.m. at 731-733 Jackson Ave., a two-story wood-framed double, spokesman Michael Williams said.

The fire started on the first floor of 733 Jackson and quickly spread to the second floor, then to 731 Jackson, Williams said.

The first arriving engine company reported heavy fire involvement, he said.

No one lived in the building, which was being used as office space, Williams said. He said some areas of the building were under renovation at the time.

Two firefighters were injured. One fell through a false ceiling on the second floor, and the other sprained his ankle. Both were treated on the scene, Williams said.

A total of 23 units and 54 firefighters responded to the fire, which was declared under control at 5:07 a.m.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
