Two injured Miss. firefighters can use some help

By The Hattiesburg-American (Mississippi)

Firefighter Ricky Stewart of the North Forrest Volunteer Fire Department is fighting for his life at the trauma/burn unit at the University of Alabama-Birmingham.

Stewart, 33, was critically injured Jan. 6 while fighting a trailer fire on Nubb Rainey Road. A second firefighter, Chip Brown, 25, the department’s chief, was also injured in the blaze.

Brown was released from Forrest General Hospital last Monday.

While the firefighters’ medical bills will be paid by Forrest County’s workers’ compensation insurance, neither the county nor the state has a mechanism in place to cover food and lodging for the members of Stewart’s family, who are in Birmingham to be by his side.
