LANCASTER, Pa. — The new fire chief in Marietta is the old fire chief.
Former Marietta Pioneer Fire Chief Tom Brill, who resigned when he moved out of the borough in December 2005, has been reinstated as fire chief.
Brill made the announcement at Marietta Borough council meeting Sept. 12 and said Steve Shireman would be taking over his duties as deputy chief.
“There has been a change in the command structure,” Brill said. “Chief (Glenn) Orr stepped down.”
Brill said the fire company members made an exception in their bylaws to reinstate him because he had moved out of the borough to Trout Run Road in East Donegal Township.
He said Orr had “too much on his plate” because, in addition to his role as fire chief, he also held down a full-time job and two part-time jobs.
Brill said he is now trying to work through a seven-month backlog of reports that were never completed.
Also at the meeting, a resident requested council keep the town’s fire alarm at the forefront of their business. She said her children’s sleep is being disturbed by the siren.
It also was brought to council’s attention that during a recent fire at McCleary’s Public House on Front Street, East Donegal firefighters were called to the scene, but did not arrive because their pagers never went off.
Giving Marietta’s firefighters pagers is one of the proposed solutions to silencing the borough’s fire alarm overnight.
Also, Sept. 12 council announced Trick or Treat will be held Oct. 31 from 6 to 10 p.m. for children 12 and under.
