Former NC fire chief sentenced for embezzling over $170K

Along with his sentence, Herman Junior Jones was ordered to pay over $145,000 in restitution

LUMBERTON, N.C. — A former fire chief was sentenced to a minimum of four years after being found guilty of embezzling over $170,000 from the department.

Herman Junior Jones was convicted Wednesday for embezzling funds over a three-year period, reported Red Springs Citizen. Although sentenced to a minimum of four years, Jones could face a maximum of six years and seven months in prison.

Jones served as chief for the department from 2010 to 2012, which was when officials noticed money was missing during an audit.

He was arrested in 2014. Along with his sentence, Jones was ordered to pay over $145,000 in restitution.
