NORTH BELLMORE, N.Y. — A North Bellmore Fire Department volunteer firefighter was arrested Tuesday and charged with a May arson incident that involved setting fire to another man’s Jeep, Nassau County police said.
Matthew Greve, 25, of 61 Sycamore St., West Hempstead, was arrested on charges of third-degree arson in connection with the arson, which occurred May 19 in North Bellmore.
Police said Greve entered the firehouse early on May 19, removed a Halligan bar, a firefighter’s tool, and filled a water bottle with gasoline.
Police said Greve then went to Dewey Avenue, where he found the victim’s 1999 Jeep Cherokee parked, broke a vehicle window with the Halligan bar, poured gasoline on a seat inside the Jeep -- and set it ablaze. The fire destroyed the sport utility vehicle, police said.
Police said Greve and the victim know each other, but did not say whether the other man also was a firefighter. The nature of the dispute was unclear, but police said the victim’s Jeep was “purposely targeted.”
No one was injured in the arson, police said.
Greve is scheduled for arraignment Wednesday in First District Court in Hempstead.
