Homeowners have been paying excessive insurance premiums as a result of the unsatisfactory rating of their fire department

MANCHESTER, Tenn. — The Coffee County Health, Welfare and Recreation Committee passed a motion on Tuesday to withhold $22,000 in proposed annual budget funds from the North Coffee Volunteer Fire Department until its Insurance Services Office (ISO) rating, which currently stands at 9, can be improved.

Commissioners Margaret Cunningham and Kimberly Martin, both of whom are members of the committee, said that homeowners in the North Coffee area have been paying excessive premiums for homeowner’s insurance as a result of the unsatisfactory rating of their fire department for the last 10 or more years.

Although committee chairman Jackie Duncan said North Coffee’s ISO rating has always been at 9, as far as he knew, Martin and others said it was time for a change. “We’re the new commission and we were put here to help the county stop wasting money,” Martin said.
