AUSTIN — A firefighter who was injured in a condo fire in October has been released from the hospital.

KXAN reported that the Austin Fire Department said firefighter Jimmy Casares had left the hospital and was resting comfortably at home.

Casares will continue rehab at a burn unit following surgery he received at the hospital.

His colleagues, Lt. Jeremy Burke and firefighter Willie Cook, have also returned home. An Austin police officer who was responded to the fire was treated for smoke inhalation.

The October 18 condo fire displaced about 40 people and damaged 14 condominiums. Crews entered the fire to attempt to save someone in the building, but that person turned out to be out of town. The first mayday call of a trapped firefighter went out at around 7:53 a.m.

“The three firefighters were quickly brought out, initially treated by firefighters and then switched over their care to EMS,” Austin Fire Department Division Chief Palmer Buck said.

The fire displaced about 40 people and damaged 14 condominiums.
