GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — After spending three months off duty, a firefighter returned to work cancer-free.

Grand Junction Fire Capt. Brian Cherveny was diagnosed with throat cancer last year and underwent two surgeries, reported the Western Slope Now.

“How am I going to take care of my family, can I go to work again, am I going to be able to get back to the front seat of the job that I love,” Capt. Cherveny said.

Since returning to work, Capt. Cherveny said his battle with cancer has prompted him to launch a campaign on reducing the risk of cancer caused by firefighting.
