LOS FRESNOS, Texas — The son of a fallen firefighter was escorted to his first day of pre-kindergarten by more than a dozen firefighters.

RGVProud reported that Silus Sheldon’s father, Derek Sheldon, died in February, and his colleagues decided to pay tribute to him by lining the hallway and saluting his son as he went to his first class.

“My son was a firefighter in Brownsville and Los Fresnos, these guys [firefighters] are his friends and they wanted to honor him by escorting his son to class for the first day of school,” Derek’s father and Los Fresnos Fire Department Assistant Fire Chief Geronimo Sheldon said.

Brownsville Fire Department Deputy Fire Chief and Los Fresnos Fire Department Capt. Jarrett Sheldon, Derek’s brother, was one of the firefighters who escorted Silus to school.

“We just wanted to show support since his dad is not able to be here,” Capt. Sheldon said.
