NORWOOD, Ohio — A fire department ensured that a little girl with cerebral palsy could have a new, specialized bike in time for her birthday.
WCPO reported that Mackenzie Trost, 12, was diagnosed with cerebral palsy when she was a baby, and her mobility is limited.
“She’s never had a bike,” Stacy Trost, Mackenzie’s mother, said. “But we’ve always tried to do different things where she could be outside.”
Mackenzie’s family was raising money on social media for a custom bike that she could ride, and the Norwood Fire Department knew they had to help out.
“It’s an extension of what we do,” firefighter Jeff Lackmeyer said. “It’s not an emergency situation, but we’re here to help.”
The department donated $900 toward the fundraiser and presented the bike to her at the firehouse —just in time for her birthday.
“It’s always a great experience to see a kid who doesn’t have the ability to ride a regular bike like some other kids get this and experience that for the first time,” Lackmeyer said.
