First responders surprise young hit-and-run victim with new bike

Firefighters, EMS providers and police officers made a big show when arriving at 8-year-old Jenciel Filero’s home to give him a bike after his was destroyed

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — A group of first responders surprised a young hit-and-run victim with a special gift.

WKBN reported that firefighters, EMS providers and police officers showed up in fire trucks, ambulances and cruisers to deliver a new bike to 8-year-old Jenciel Filero, whose own bike was destroyed when he was hit by a vehicle.

“We found him in the middle of the road, right in the center of the intersection, face down. His bike was destroyed a few feet away from him,” Youngstown Fire Department Captain Tony Burnett said. “The person who hit the boy also fled the scene. So now it was a hit and run.”

Filero recovered after the incident, but word traveled throughout the fire station and a motorcycle club called the Axeman Firefighters set out to finding Filero a new bike.

“I immediately made the call to the other Axemen and we put our heads together and found a bicycle for this boy,” Axeman Firefighters member and firefighter Shaun Rosan said.

Filero was overjoyed to receive the surprise.

“Butterflies are in my stomach. I really love this new bike,” he said.
