NEWARK, N.J. — A firefighter who has spent the last month in a rehabilitation facility after being critically injured while battling a blaze was escorted home by colleagues in a fire truck.
NJ.com reported that Newark Fire Department firefighter Paul Leber was greeted by firefighters, officials and friends who lined the walkway as he exited the Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation.
Leber was trapped in a burning tire shop on Dec. 30 when he became disoriented and could not exit. He was transported to the hospital in critical condition with burns to his face and airway.
“We are thankful that (Paul) Leber has reached this significant milestone in his recovery,” Newark Director of Public Safety Anthony Ambrose said. “Over the past month, I’ve come to consider Paulie a friend. I’ve spoken to him almost every day since he was injured and I’m proud of him and for what he stands for.”
