Longtime NY firefighter dies from COVID-19

Suffern Firefighter Jason Weinger, 57, was a nearly 40-year veteran of the fire service and a former lieutenant of the Ocean Beach Volunteer Fire Department

SUFFERN, N.Y. — A New York firefighter with nearly 40 years in the fire service died from COVID-19 on Saturday. 

Suffern Hook & Ladder Co. #1 Firefighter Jason Weinger, 57, had previously served as a lieutenant at the Ocean Beach Volunteer Fire Department and served as a firefighter in Melbourne Beach, Florida, for four years while attending college, according to a Facebook post by Suffer Hook & Ladder Co. #1. 

He first joined Ocean Beach Volunteer Fire Department in 1981, and joined the Suffern department in 1994. He served the Melbourne Beach department from 1982 to 1985. 

Weinger is survived by his wife Jill and three children. 

"Jason was a very devoted dad, and will be sorely missed," Suffern Hook & Ladder Co. #1 wrote in a statement.
