TAMPA, Fla. — Four days after pleading guilty to embezzling from a charity for abused and neglected children, Alfred Schaffer was fired Friday from his job as a city fire captain, a fire department spokesman said.

Schaffer, 50, had actually resigned from his fire department job, effective Monday, but department administers on Friday recommended his termination following a brief hearing, according to Jason Penny, spokesman for the department.

Chief Tom Forward accepted the recommendation and fired Schaffer.

Schaffer pleaded guilty Monday to a federal fraud charge, admitting he stole more than $187,000 from Hope Children’s Home, where he served as Chief Financial Officer until 2011.

Schaffer faces up to 20 years in federal prison when he is sentenced sometime next year.
