HUMBOLT, Calif. — Humboldt Fire Protection District No. 1 recently began a new program to help residents during catastrophic and potentially life-changing events.
The program is the first of its kind in the area and is designed to help those who have experienced a devastating event, such as the loss of their home due to a fire, and assist them in getting through the initial hours following the incident by providing for their basic needs, according to a Humboldt Fire press release. It will work along with services already provided by the American Red Cross.
Humboldt Fire engine companies and command staff now carry gift cards that can be issued to emergency victims on a case-by-case basis to help them purchase basic living needs. Many times following an event such as a fire, the Fire District has found that individuals lose access to important needs such as checkbooks, cash, bank cards and other important financial documents. After an incident, people also need basic items such as food, clothing and medication.
The gift card will allow victims to immediately purchase basic living items without having to wait for insurance adjusters, forms or other means of assistance that take time. The normal amount to be provided is about $50, which is designed to help victims of personal catastrophe take care of immediate needs so they can concentrate on other short- and long-term issues. Humboldt Fire has already provided gift cards to victims of recent fires and the overall response has been positive, according to the press release.
The gift cards are not designed to be used frivolously, and Humboldt Fire personnel have received specific training and policy dictating the use of the cards. Officers issuing the cards are required to document it thoroughly in a separate report.
